How to reach Udaipur
Udaipur sits in southern Rajasthan, well connected by air, rail and road, and for most travellers it is one of the easier Rajasthan cities to reach on a schedule. Because it is somewhat off the main DelhiโJaipurโAgra "Golden Triangle" line and set among hills, connectivity here is often better by air than the map suggests, which is worth keeping in mind when you plan.
By air, the city is served by Maharana Pratap Airport (airport code UDR), located at Dabok roughly 22 km east of the centre. It is a domestic airport with regular flights to major Indian hubs, and for many itineraries โ especially if you are combining Udaipur with Mumbai, Delhi or a longer trip โ flying in is the practical choice, saving the long overland legs that Rajasthan distances otherwise demand. From the airport, pre-paid taxis and app-based cabs run into town; the drive to the lake area and old city typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and your exact destination.
By train, Udaipur City railway station (station code UDZ) is the main railhead, sitting about 2โ3 km from the city centre. It has good connections to Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Ahmedabad and other cities, and arriving by an overnight train is a popular and economical way in. The station is well set up with autos and taxis at the exit. Note that the pre-generated timetable and live-availability boxes on this page will show you current train options โ this guide won't reproduce schedules, which change seasonally.
By road, Udaipur is linked by national highways in several directions. Ahmedabad in neighbouring Gujarat lies roughly 260 km to the south (about five hours by car or bus), making Udaipur a natural entry or exit point for travellers pairing Rajasthan with Gujarat. Within Rajasthan, road links run north toward Ajmer, Jaipur and the rest of the state, and the city fits neatly into an extended "Golden Triangle plus" loop. State and private buses, including comfortable Volvo services, connect Udaipur with regional cities; long-distance driving is scenic but slow because of the hills.
Getting around once you arrive is straightforward. Auto-rickshaws are the workhorse of local transport โ agree the fare before you set off, as meters are rarely used. App-based cabs operate in the city and are handy for longer hops such as the airport, Sajjangarh or Fateh Sagar. The real pleasure of Udaipur, though, is that the historic core around Lake Pichola โ Lal Ghat, Hanuman Ghat, the lanes below the Jagdish Temple and the City Palace โ is compact and best explored on foot. Vehicle access in the tightest old-city lanes is limited, so expect to walk the last stretch to many lake-view guesthouses. For day trips to the forts and temples outside the city, hiring a car with a driver for the day is the most efficient option and is easily arranged.
